{"id":273,"date":"2026-03-23T15:57:33","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T19:57:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/open-knowledge-commons\/?p=273"},"modified":"2026-03-30T12:09:52","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T16:09:52","slug":"june-2026-ai-resistant-open-assignment-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/open-knowledge-commons\/2026\/03\/23\/june-2026-ai-resistant-open-assignment-design\/","title":{"rendered":"AI-resistant Open Assignment Design &#8211; June 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We invite you to join your colleagues who are creating space for students as knowledge holders and creators as they incorporate open education practices into their courses!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building on the open educational resources (OER) movement, <a href=\"https:\/\/pose.open.ubc.ca\/open-education\/open-pedagogy\/defining-open-pedagogy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open pedagogy<\/a> engages students as knowledge creators, often in open, public venues, creating spaces for students to enact agency in their own learning and co-creating learning experiences with instructors. Student work moves from \u201cdisposable assignments\u201d with an audience of one, the instructor, to lasting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecampusnews.com\/teaching-learning\/2023\/08\/02\/renewable-assignments-students-diversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">renewable assignments<\/a> with a broader audience. Examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Public writing assignments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60)\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/openpedagogy.org\/course-level\/editing-wikipedia-in-the-classroom-individualized-open-pedagogy-at-scale\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/openpedagogy.org\/course-level\/editing-wikipedia-in-the-classroom-individualized-open-pedagogy-at-scale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">editing Wikipedia<\/a> articles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>writing for public blogs (see examples in <a href=\"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/art-106-at-the-met\/category\/fall-2024\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/art-106-at-the-met\/category\/fall-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">art history<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/concerts-you-missed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">music<\/a> (with <a href=\"https:\/\/cetls.bmcc.cuny.edu\/blog\/2025\/04\/04\/engaging-students-in-writing-in-the-open-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">instructor video<\/a>), and <a href=\"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/bmccreads\/tag\/eng-201\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">English<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Multimedia assignments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60)\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>recording audio or podcasts made available on the BMCC OpenLab (see <a href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/ny_pubs\/98\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Podcasting as Pedagogy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cuny.manifoldapp.org\/read\/podcasting-history-as-an-alternative-assignment\/section\/4ae4fe14-0e18-4124-baaf-256137255715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Podcasting History as an Alternative Assignment<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>writing and publishing zines distributed through the Library (see <a href=\"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/bmcc-zine-library\/student-zines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">student zine<\/a> examples)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this seminar, participants will design an open assignment. Activities will include pedagogical conversations with peers and faculty mentors on Zoom, as well as asynchronous activities such as readings and reflections. Zoom sessions will take place on <strong>Tuesdays and Thursdays in June, 10:00 &#8211; 11:30 am<\/strong>. Applicants should be available on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Week 1: June 2 and 4<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Week 2: June 9 and 11<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Week 3: June 16 and 18<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Week 4: June 23 and 25<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Apply by Monday, April 20, at 5 pm<\/strong>, using this <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/tUNq34FdP5dVR1su9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">application form<\/a>.
