{"id":35,"date":"2019-04-05T16:58:48","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T16:58:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/mmp460\/?page_id=35"},"modified":"2019-05-01T17:17:32","modified_gmt":"2019-05-01T17:17:32","slug":"kinetic-typography","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/mmp460\/kinetic-typography\/","title":{"rendered":"Kinetic Typography"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>What is Kinetic Typography?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Kinetic&#8221; derives from the Greek\u00a0<em><span class=\"foreign notranslate\">kinetikos:<\/span><\/em> &#8220;moving, putting in motion&#8221;. &#8220;Kinetic typography&#8221; refers to the art of animating letters and words. This is a popular technique in today&#8217;s media &#8211; you&#8217;ve likely encountered moving typography in advertising, music videos, websites, and apps.<\/p>\n<p>However, kinetic type didn&#8217;t come about in the digital age. It has been popular in animation and movies for many decades. The filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock often used elaborate and highly stylized opening credits which are still amongst the most beautiful examples of animated text.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Tek8QmKRODw\"><em>The opening credits for Alfred Hitchcock&#8217;s 1960 &#8220;Psycho&#8221;<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This workshop will introduce you to kinetic type techniques through Adobe After Effects. These files can then be exported to video or GIF.<\/p>\n<p>There are some interesting HTML\/CSS\/Javascript experiments (see the\u00a0<em>Further reading\/resources\u00a0<\/em>section at the bottom of this page). These are fairly advanced code-wise, but could be a nice option for someone with strong front-end development skills.<\/p>\n<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<h2 class=\"entry-title\">Adobe After Effects: Introduction<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<h3><strong>What is Adobe After Effects<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After Effects is part of the Adobe Creative Suite (like Animate, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign , Premiere etc.) It is often cited as the industry standard for Motion Graphics (a term which encompasses a wide variety of projects, but where typography usually plays a central role). While After Effects is very versatile and could also be used for character animation, we will focus on its typography tools in this workshop.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Interface<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The After Effects Interface can be setup differently for different usage. The preferred workspace for text driven Motion Graphics is \u201cText\u201d (go to\u00a0<em>Windows &gt; Workspaces &gt; Text<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>The most important windows when animating are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Project Panel\u00a0<\/strong>is where the compositions you create are listed (they can be grouped inside subfolders)<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Timeline<\/strong>\u00a0is where you control action through time. It is composed of layers<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Composition Window<\/strong>\u00a0is where you\u2019ll place and adjust your visual elements<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Character and Paragraph Panels<\/strong>are where you can set the size, font, color etc. of your text<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Effects Panel\u00a0<\/strong>is where you can find\/add effects to your layers<\/li>\n<li><strong>The\u00a0Tool Palette<\/strong>\u00a0is where you\u2019ll find tools to create and edit visual elements. The properties to the right of the palette will change according to the activated tool. You can save these adjustments by going to\u00a0<em>Window &gt; Workspaces &gt; New Workspace.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Key concepts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After Effects can be broken down into 6 main concepts:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Compositions:<\/strong>You can think of Compositions as \u201cscenes\u201d. Each composition has its own Timeline. All compositions in a project can be accessed through the Project Panel.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Layers:\u00a0<\/strong>Each new shape or text you create is placed on a separate layer. Each layer has its own Timeline.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Animation: <\/strong>Animation properties (such as scale, rotation, position etc.) can be found on each layer of the Timeline by toggling the little arrow to the left of the layer\u2019s name. Each time one of these properties is changed, a new Keyframe is created on that layer\u2019s Timeline.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Effects:\u00a0<\/strong>After Effects includes effects (such as Fractal Noise, Color matting, Channels etc.) They\u00a0can be found in the Effects Panel, applied to layers and combined to dramatically change the look of a layer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>3D: <\/strong>While individual layers are 2D, they occupy a 3Dimensional space:\u00a0Each layer in the Composition are positioned along the x (horizontal), y (vertical) AND z (depth) axis. You can use the camera to reveal the 3dimensional aspect of your composition.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rendering:\u00a0<\/strong>We must render our projects to share them with the world (i.e: exporting to Quicktime).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>Creating a New Composition<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To create a new HD video Composition:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Go to <em>Composition\u00a0&gt; New (<\/em>or <em>Command + N)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Set the Preset dropdown to HDTV 1080 29.97 (unlike traditional character animation, the standard frame rate for motion graphics is 29.97).<\/li>\n<li>You can set the approximate duration of your animation in the\u00a0<em>Duration\u00a0<\/em>box (although you can also always add\/remove frames later).<\/li>\n<li>Set the background color by clicking on the color swatch at the bottom of the Window.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_135\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-135\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-135\" src=\"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/mmp460\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/2019\/04\/screen-shot-2018-08-13-at-1-53-15-pm-1024x924.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"758\" srcset=\"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/mmp460\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/2019\/04\/screen-shot-2018-08-13-at-1-53-15-pm-1024x924.png 1024w, https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/mmp460\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/2019\/04\/screen-shot-2018-08-13-at-1-53-15-pm-300x271.png 300w, https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/mmp460\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/2019\/04\/screen-shot-2018-08-13-at-1-53-15-pm-768x693.png 768w, https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/mmp460\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/2019\/04\/screen-shot-2018-08-13-at-1-53-15-pm.png 1168w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-135\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Composition Settings Window<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Before going any further, save your project:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Go to\u00a0<em>File &gt; Save As\u00a0<\/em>and give your file an appropriate name and location.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<h2 class=\"entry-title\">Basic Transform Properties<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>In After Effects, each layer has a set of Animation properties. Each one controls a different aspect of the layer\u2019s content and can be adjusted overtime.<\/p>\n<p>There are also Animation properties that control the content of the layer (i.e: Shape, Solid , Text). These will vary depending on the type of layer\/content.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>General Layer properties<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Solid, Shape and Text Layers all have the same 5 basic properties. They are listed under the Transform tab (toggle the little arrow to the left \u201cTransform\u201d if you don\u2019t see them).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_136\" Layers)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What do they control?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anchor Point: x, y axis of the control point of the layer (the center of the composition, by default)<\/li>\n<li>Position: x, y axis of the layer on the composition<\/li>\n<li>Scale: width, height of the layer\u2019s content<\/li>\n<li>Rotation: full (360) rotation + degrees of the layer<\/li>\n<li>Opacity: 0% = fully transparent, 100% = fully opaque<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can decide to change one, several (or none) of these properties over the course of your animation.<\/p>\n<p>Any property that will change overtime will first need to be given an initial Keyframe:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bring the Time Indicator at the point you want to start keeping track of the property (i.e:0;00;00;00)\n<ul>\n<li>You can do this by sliding the Indicator along the Timeline or by entering the time numerically in the Preview Time box (hours;minutes;seconds;frames).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure little Stop Watch icon to the left of the property and set the value you want it to have at this point of the animation (i.e: completely transparent \/ 0%)<\/li>\n<li>Notice that a little diamond has the next Keyframe, move the Time Indicator (i.e: 0;00;05;00) and simply change the value of the property.<\/li>\n<li>Notice that the new diamond\/Keyframe was automatically created when the value pressing the Spacebar. You\u2019ll notice the After Effects automatically tweens between Keyframes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"entry-title\">Animating Text Layers<\/h2>\n<p>While all the basic transforms (Anchor Point, Position, Scale, Rotation, Opacity) can be applied to Text Layers, they also have unique properties.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Text Animators<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Text Layer Animator Properties allow you to control the individual characters and\/or words within a layer and to create more dynamic animated text.<\/p>\n<p>There are 17 Animator Properties and each of them has several basic and advanced parameters. You can create your own or use <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1t2tJmykz5oRaRmorce0YDk6S6vKS0tx1\/view?usp=sharing\">this example file<\/a>. It consists of 5 Text Layers, each one appearing at a different points on the Timeline. No Transform nor Animator properties have been applied so far.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cmicrophone check\u201d layer appears all at once at\u00a00;00;01;15. What if wanted each letter to fade in one by one?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set your Time Indicator to the beginning of the \u201cmicrophone check\u201d layer (0;00;01;15)<\/li>\n<li>Toggle the arrow to the left of the \u201cmicrophone check\u201d Text tab.<\/li>\n<li>Click and hold the \u201cAnimate\u201d button and select \u201cOpacity\u201d. set its value to 0%.<\/li>\n<li>Position the Time Indicator where you want your text the fade to end (0;00;02;15) and change the value of the Start property to 100%,<\/li>\n<li>Preview your Animation by hitting the\u00a0<em>Spacebar.\u00a0<\/em>You\u2019ll notice that each letter gradually appears on the screen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_143\" However these lines can be transformed into different shapes and can even be animated along a path. We could use our basic Layer Transform properties to rotate the ball, but the Path Options can be used to create a similar effect (there are no right\/or wrong workflow in this instance \u2013 just different possibilities):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set the Time Indicator to where you\u2019d like the rotation to start (i.e:\u00a00;00;00;00)<\/li>\n<li>Toggle the Path Options tab<\/li>\n<li>Click on the little Stop Watch next to the First Margin option and set its value to 0.<\/li>\n<li>Set the Time Indicator to where you\u2019d like the rotation to end (i.e:\u00a00;00;05;00)<\/li>\n<li>Set the First Margin option value to 360.<\/li>\n<li>Preview your animation by hitting the <em>Spacebar<\/em>. You will see your letters rotate around the shape. Notice that there are no Fill\/Stroke options since what ww draw will be applied as a Mask.<\/li>\n<li>Draw your \u201csquiggle\u201d by clicking, holding and dragging the Pen tool to create curves. Don\u2019t worry about it being perfect on the first pass.
