However a third dimension can be added to any layer, adding a Y axis and whole set of parameters to the Transform properties.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll explore 3D space in After Effects in this simple tutorial.\u00a0You can watch the finished example below and download the .aep file\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id=1NOJ-9wVof9tqZU9CLjrvLr-iic_MWIA6\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/286400740\">https:\/\/vimeo.com\/286400740<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start by creating a new Composition<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Go to\u00a0<em>Composition &gt; New Composition<\/em>\u00a0(or C<em>ommand + N<\/em>) and use the following Settings:\n<ul>\n<li>Name: \u201c3D Example\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Preset dropdown:\u00a0<i>HDTV 1080 29.97<\/i><\/li>\n<li>Duration: 0;00;12;00<\/li>\n<li>Set the background color by clicking on the color swatch at the bottom of the Window (#FF9898)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s create our first layer &#8211; a large yellow circle:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Activate the Ellipse tool and set the Fill (#FFFBC6) and Stroke (none)<\/li>\n<li>Click and drag on the Composition to create the Ellipse (make it almost as tall as the composition)<\/li>\n<li>Rename the layer &#8220;yellowEllipse&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Center the layer\/ellipse:\n<ul>\n<li>Go to <em>Layer &gt; Transform &gt; Center Anchor Point in Layer Content<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Go to <em>Layer &gt; Transform &gt; Center in View<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s add our second layer &#8211; a smaller green circle:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure the &#8220;yellowEllipse&#8221; layer is inactive<\/li>\n<li>Activate the Ellipse tool and set the Fill (#86BE91) and Stroke (no Stroke)<\/li>\n<li>Click and drag on the Composition to create the Ellipse (make it smaller than the yellow ellipse)<\/li>\n<li>Rename the layer &#8220;greenEllipse&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Center the layer\/ellipse:\n<ul>\n<li>Go to <em>Layer &gt; Transform &gt; Center Anchor Point in Layer Content<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Go to <em>Layer &gt; Transform &gt; Center in View<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, we&#8217;ll add our text layer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Activate the Text tool<\/li>\n<li>Set the options in the Character Panel, in this example, we used:\n<ul>\n<li>Font: Helvetica Neue, Condensed Bold<\/li>\n<li>Color: #FFFFFF Fill, no Stroke<\/li>\n<li>Size: 210px<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click on the Composition and type your text (&#8220;3D&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>Center the layer\/text:\n<ul>\n<li>Go to <em>Layer &gt; Transform &gt; Center Anchor Point in Layer Content<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Go to <em>Layer &gt; Transform &gt; Center in View<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_756\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-756\" style=\"width: 974px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-756\" src=\"https:\/\/mmp260.files.wordpress.com\/2018\/08\/screen-shot-2018-08-23-at-12-48-53-pm.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2018-08-23 at 12.48.53 PM\" width=\"974\" height=\"552\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-756\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Three layer in the Composition (2D)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These three layers are stacked in the Timeline but only have a X and Y axis. Let&#8217;s turn all of them into 3D layers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turn on the 3D Layer option for each layer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_757\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-757\" style=\"width: 1060px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-757\" src=\"https:\/\/mmp260.files.wordpress.com\/2018\/08\/screen-shot-2018-08-23-at-12-52-02-pm.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2018-08-23 at 12.52.02 PM\" width=\"1060\" height=\"140\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-757\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">3D Layer option turned on<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Composition will look the same but we&#8217;ll now be able to use the layer&#8217;s Y axis (depth). A second\/bird&#8217;s eye view of the composition is useful when positioning elements in 3dimensional space. Let&#8217;s change the view of our Composition window:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set the view layout dropdown to &#8220;2 Views &#8211; Horizontal&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Click on the new view (on the left) and make sure 3D view dropdown is set to &#8220;Top&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_758\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-758\" style=\"width: 1662px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-758\" src=\"https:\/\/mmp260.files.wordpress.com\/2018\/08\/screen-shot-2018-08-23-at-12-56-32-pm.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2018-08-23 at 12.56.32 PM\" width=\"1662\" height=\"588\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-758\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2 Views layout enabled with 2nd view set to &#8220;Top&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We&#8217;ll now adjust the Y position of each layer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Activate the yellowEllipse layer. You&#8217;ll see a little blue arrow appear in the Top view, representing its Y position.<\/li>\n<li>Click and drag the blue arrow until you are happy with the Y position of the ellipse (provide a little space between the edge of the window and the ellipse)<\/li>\n<li>Do the same for the greenEllipse and Text layers (bringing both forward a bit &#8211; make sure the Text is in front of the green ellipse)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_759\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-759\" style=\"width: 1412px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-759\" src=\"https:\/\/mmp260.files.wordpress.com\/2018\/08\/screen-shot-2018-08-23-at-2-03-02-pm.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2018-08-23 at 2.03.02 PM\" width=\"1412\" height=\"374\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-759\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Top and Front views with Text layer activated<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Let&#8217;s animate! We&#8217;ll start by pulsating the yellow circle. The process is the same as if the 3D was turned off.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set the Time Indicator to where you&#8217;d like the pulsing to start (0;00;00;00)<\/li>\n<li>Toggle the Transform tab of the yellowEllipse layer<\/li>\n<li>Click on the little Stop Watch icon next to the Scale property<\/li>\n<li>Set the Time Indicator to where you&#8217;d like the circle to reach its smallest point (0;00;01;00)<\/li>\n<li>Set the value of one of the Scale parameters to 98% (they will all change to 98% since the &#8220;preserve aspect ratio&#8221; link is turned on).<\/li>\n<li>Copy the two keyframes (select them both and click <em>Command + C<\/em>)\u00a0and copy them (<em>Command + V<\/em>) every two seconds (starting at\u00a00;00;02;00)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_760\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-760\" style=\"width: 2204px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-760\" we&#8217;ll have our green circle appear by rotation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hide the Text Layer to focus on the green circle<\/li>\n<li>Set the Time Indicator to where you&#8217;d like the circle to start appearing on the screen\/rotate (0;00;02;00)<\/li>\n<li>Toggle the Transform tab of the greenEllipse layer<\/li>\n<li>Click on the little Stop Watch icon next to the Y Rotation property and set the value so that the circle disappears (0x+90.0)<\/li>\n<li>Set the Time Indicator to where you&#8217;d like the circle to stop rotating (0;00;05;00) and set the value to how many rotations you want the ellipse to undergo, making sure it faces the viewer at the end (3x+0.0)<\/li>\n<li>Let&#8217;s add an Easy Ease to the Keyframes to make the animation more dynamic:\n<ul>\n<li>Select the two Keyframes and press <em>F9<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_762\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-762\" style=\"width: 1782px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img applied)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Next, we&#8217;ll have our text layer fade in and move towards the viewer until it is out of view:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reveal the Text Layer<\/li>\n<li>Set the Time Indicator to where you&#8217;d like the Text to start fading in (0;00;05;00)<\/li>\n<li>Toggle the Transform tab of the Text layer<\/li>\n<li>Click on the little Stop Watch icon next to the Opacity property and set the value to 0%<\/li>\n<li>Set the Time Indicator to where you&#8217;d like the Text to be fully opaque (0;00;06;00)<\/li>\n<li>Set the value of the Opacity property to 100%<\/li>\n<li>Set the Time Indicator to where you&#8217;d like Text to start moving forward (0;00;08;00)<\/li>\n<li>Click on the little Stop Watch icon next to the Position property and leave the value as it is.<\/li>\n<li>Set the Time Indicator to where you&#8217;d like Text to be out of view (0;00;08;15)<\/li>\n<li>Set the third value of the Position property (the Y axis) to a large negative number, so that it is beyond the Composition view (~-2,700)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_763\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-763\" style=\"width: 2094px\" class=\"wp-caption (2 Keyframes each)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Finally, we&#8217;ll have the green circle recede behind the yellow one.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set the Time Indicator to where you&#8217;d like the green circle to start moving backwards (0;00;09;00)<\/li>\n<li>Toggle the Transform tab of the greenEllipse layer<\/li>\n<li>Click on the little Stop Watch icon next to the Position property and leave the value as it is.<\/li>\n<li>Set the Time Indicator to where you&#8217;d like the green circle to reach it&#8217;s final position (behind the yellow circle) (0;00;11;00)<\/li>\n<li>in the Top View, click and drag the blue arrow until the green circle is behind the yellow one<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_764\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-764\" style=\"width: 658px\"
