One Piece (1999) by Eiichiro Oda is one of the most popular Japanese animated series in the United States, it belongs to the shōnen genre. Its plot is about Monkey D. Luffy who ate a devil fruit, this gave him elastic powers and he and his crew of pirates travel the seas in search of the legendary treasure “One Piece”, so that Luffy can become the King of Pirates. Its success in the U.S. according to the reviews is because of its unique characters and because each one has its own story which makes the public feel more in the role of the character and because it has a lot of action and adventure and for its number of episodes that to this day are 1128 and more are still being produced, but lately it became more viral and known because they made a mini live action series of One Piece that was released on Netflix and was very well received. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

I chose this film because since I saw it for the first time as a child and until today when I watch it again, I always understand something new that I didn’t realize before, and I love its strange and uncensored characters, and how its background music and songs make it more exciting and suspenseful. I chose it for its animation technique, its dark and sarcastic tone, for its music, the design of its characters, and because, for a Disney movie, it is very dark and scary and Disney doesn’t make this kind of movies nowadays.

I’m going to focus on researching the animation technique and how it was created, the creator of the music, the designer of the characters, whether or not it had a big impact after its release, and a brief summary about Tim Burton and his other great works.

“A Night on Bald Mountain” (1933) by Alexander Alexeieff & Claire Parker.

This film attracts me because of the technique that was used to create it, which is with pins and shadows, something I never thought it was possible to use to create an animation. I liked how all the shapes and creatures merge in the film in a very abstract way and while you are watching it you get lost and don’t know what is happening, it is a very strange film. I will research about:

How the pinscreen animation technique was invented, What is the real plot of the film according to the director and What other recognized films exist with this technique.

Prompt 2

The main reason why they decided to take the comics as their main reference to launch the first animations, was because of the money, since the whole process to create an animation was expensive, they knew that many of the comics were already well known and had a lot of public behind them, for example Felix the Cat, was already becoming better known for his comics and that gave them the security that if they created an animated film of one of these comics, it would be guaranteed that they were going to have a great reception from the public and their investment would be worth it because all the public of the comics would now go to the theater to see them but animated.

And another reason was because of their style, which was comedy and their characters were exaggerated, which facilitated the idea of being able to create animations that would attract the public’s attention.

James Encalada Week 2 – Prompt 3

If I could have been in one of the shows of “Fantasmagorie” by Gaspard Robertson in 1797, at that time, the first reaction I would have had would have been curiosity to know what was happening in the theater and at the same time fear for what was going to happen, because at that time the supernatural phenomena were beginning to become famous. Inside the show, everything was dark and the smoke made it seem that the ghosts and specters were really floating in front of us, I would have felt terrified, because surely the screams of the other people also made the atmosphere more terrifying. I would have gone home in fear that some ghost from the show would follow me and appear in the dark.

And the first thing that came to my mind today that is the closest thing to the shows at that time, would be the haunted houses or houses of terror that are in the fairs in some towns or cities. Because they use the environment around you, the smoke and ghosts to make you feel that same sense of fear and at that moment just think that everything is real even if it is not. And virtual reality, which now without the need to be in a theater you can feel the whole experience from your home and in some places make it more immersive by creating a 4D scenario.

Hello everyone my name is James Encalada, my major is animation and motion graphics. I chose this course because I like art and everything about art, in the future I want to learn a lot about 3D design, and my goals are to be able to have my own studio. I really like science fiction series and movies, especially the ones that have to do with mythological or weird creatures, my hobbies are listening to music, playing video games, and doing any kind of sport or exercise.

Some of my favorite animated series are “Regular Show” (2010-2017) by James Garland Quintel and “Adventure Time” (2010-2018) by Pendleton Ward, both are from Cartoon Network. These series are my favorite because of their hand-drawn animation and everything is so surreal.
