In regards to the most popular and well received animated Japanese shows, it would be Fullmetal Alchemist (2003). It belongs to the Shonen genre, which means it appeals to a young boy and teen demographic. The general storyline of Fullmetal Alchemist is that two brothers try to bring back their deceased mother using the taboo human alchemy and face physical consequences for doing so. They leave their childhood home in order to seek the fabled Philosopher’s stone in order to regain their old bodies back, but they are not the only ones after it. It was distributed to American audiences on November 6th, 2004 after it was dubbed and produced by Funimation and shown on Adult Swim. American audiences seem to resonate with the series because of the well put together plot and beautiful animation that still holds up well today. While it is not as popular of a series in Japan, Fullmetal Alchemist continues to be one of the most well received anime in America despite the lack of merchandise in comparison to Naruto, Dragonball, My Hero Academia, Sailor Moon, Demon Slayer, and many more.
