This week, our goal is to get oriented to the course&#8211; including expectations, materials, and other basics&#8211;\u00a0 and to begin to get to know one another.\u00a0 We will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Become familiar with the course syllabus + course schedule<\/li>\n<li>Introduce ourselves to one another<\/li>\n<li>Begin to think about the course project + review at least one example of &#8220;feminist praxis&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><strong>Watch + Read<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>In <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/EddaMBrU1FI\"><strong>this video<\/strong><\/a>, I introduce myself and share my background, experience, and interests in Gender and Women&#8217;s Studies.<\/li>\n<li>Here is the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/gws-capstone-fall-2020\/about-this-class\/syllabus\/\">course syllabus<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/gws-capstone-fall-2020\/about-this-class\/schedule\/\">course schedule. <\/a>\u00a0Please read them carefully.<\/li>\n<li>Here are the instructions for the <a href=\"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/gws-capstone-fall-2020\/assignments\/project-overview\/\">Final Project<\/a> and the first stage of the project: <a href=\"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/gws-capstone-fall-2020\/assignments\/project-proposal-assignment\/\">the Project Proposal. <\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><em>Praxis Model: INCITE!<\/em><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Every week, we will take a close look at an example of <strong>feminist praxis,<\/strong> a term that we will learn more about next week.<\/li>\n<li>This week, we will look at <a href=\"https:\/\/incite-national.org\/\">INCITE! Women, Trans, and Gender Non-Conforming People of Color<\/a>, which has been one of my feminist homes. INCITE! was founded in 2000 by women of color to make connections between violence that women and gender non-conforming people\u00a0 face in relationships (e.g. domestic violence, sexual assault) and violence that we face at the hands of the state (e.g. law enforcement, ICE). INCITE! was where I first learned about abolition, or ways to fight for gender justice that don&#8217;t rely on police and prisons as the solution.<\/li>\n<li>Check out the site and especially their <a href=\"https:\/\/incite-national.org\/analysis\/\">Analysis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/incite-national.org\/stop-law-enforcement-violence-toolkit\/\">Stop Law Enforcement Violence Toolkit\u00a0<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/incite-national.org\/art-and-media\/\">Art and Media<\/a> page.<\/li>\n<li>As you look at the site, consider the following:\n<ul>\n<li>What issues are important to INCITE! ?<\/li>\n<li>What are the ideas (theory + analysis) that inform their work?<\/li>\n<li>What strategies do they use to make their intervention?\u00a0 What are the goals of their action?<\/li>\n<li>What catches your interest, what do you find compelling, what do you want to know more about?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong><em>Post and Comment on Discussion Board #1<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Please introduce yourself to the class.<\/strong> Your introduction can include whatever you would like to share about your background, experience, and interest in Gender and Women&#8217;s Studies, burning questions you would like to explore this semester, concerns you have about the course &#8212; and anything else that you would like us to know.\u00a0 Feel free to add video, photo, audio, or any other media that helps you to introduce yourself to us!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>COMMENT on your colleague&#8217;s post. <\/strong>In your comment, you can share an appreciation, a connection, or a question in response to what the author wrote.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>REMINDER&gt;&gt; <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/18Wallqbh48h6ozK2dxxJQd_fV7bgkkCs5dzcUSj4zvk\/edit?usp=sharing\">HOW TO POST<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1q-zhDvrnln7Tt_khKiAAe-DCEVUggEzsvii1SD6YoFM\/edit?usp=sharing\">HOW TO COMMENT<\/a> (this is also on page 4 of the syllabus):<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can <strong>write your post<\/strong> by going to the plus sign at the top of the site &gt; type a title* and type the body of your post &gt; choose the category <strong>\u201cDiscussion Board\u00a0 1&#8243;<\/strong>\u00a0 &gt; publish. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">*<strong>Please use the title format &#8220;[FirstName] [LastName] DB 1&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Submit your comment<\/strong> on the post of a classmate by selecting the title of the post &gt; scroll down to where you leave a reply &gt; type the comment &gt; post comment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Remember to review the Discussion Board instructions on page 3 of the syllabus &#8212; your original post should be \u00a0400-600 words (and can be longer), and your comments should be 3-4 complete sentences at MINIMUM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><strong>Complete the E-Learning Orientation<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>The link is <a href=\"https:\/\/bbhosted.cuny.edu\/webapps\/blackboard\/content\/listContentEditable.jsp?content_id=_36484811_1&amp;course_id=_1653216_1\">here<\/a> and on the course Blackboard site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><strong>Work on Final Project<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Begin to think about your final project&#8211;read the assignment instructions and browse examples on the Praxis Model page, all available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/gws-capstone-fall-2020\/final-project\/\">Final Project<\/a> page of the course site.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Due soon: the\u00a0 Three Idea proposal is due on Tuesday, 9\/15.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Learning Goals Welcome to Week 1 of our Capstone!
