In your post, please tell us about an object, ritual, practice, song, saying or something else that brings you joy or comfort.\u00a0 You can add a photo or video or audio if you like.<\/p>\n<p>Instructions on how to post (including how to add media) can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/gws-100-140w-introduction-to-gender-womens-studies-dr-munshi-spring-2021\/2021\/01\/26\/how-to-post\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Please title your post: <strong>First Name Last Name: Introduction<\/strong> and select &#8220;DB Introduction&#8221; as the category for your post.<\/p>\n<h4>Readings and other Materials<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The readings for this week are layered with complex ideas that we will discuss in class&#8211; please do the best you can with the readings, track what interests you, and bring questions to class.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>First, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1mgv73ndcaEuUByRZhA-_W3PlLumnPnGxZ5gwNPizukE\/edit?usp=sharing\">review these slides<\/a> as they offer context for the readings as well as guiding questions. I&#8217;ve also pasted the questions below.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Read: <\/strong>hooks, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1Zh3QArg9h_BF8awL_HV3AsZ9p8HiYThW\/view?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Feminist Politics: Where We Stand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this piece, hooks makes an argument for a definition of feminism. She says <\/span><b>it is a movement to end sexism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What does she mean by this?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to hooks, there are different misunderstandings of what feminism means. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What are the misunderstandings and why have they occurred?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Read: <\/strong>Lorde, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1uslpl0sG1tZtXio40HP3lCfqJ9vGu9yo\/view?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Age, Race, Class, and Sex: Women Redefining Difference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This essay was first delivered as a speech in which Lorde asks the audience\/reader to think about difference&#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">how does she want us to consider differences between us? What are the consequences of ignoring difference?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She also writes of the ways that differences are used to separate people. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What does she mean and what are the consequences?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this essay, Lorde expresses her vision for social change. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What does she want to see?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Listen (or read the transcript):<\/b> \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=124775888\">A Look Back at Women\u2019s Studies Since the 1970s<\/a>\u201d (6:00)\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What led to the formation of Women\u2019s Studies programs in the U.S.? We also begin to learn about the formalization of gender and women&#8217;s studies as academic fields. For this week&#8217;s post, please answer <strong>any (not all)<\/strong> of the following sets of questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Coming into this class, what are some of your initial impressions of the terms &#8220;feminism,&#8221; &#8220;sexism&#8221; and &#8220;gender and women&#8217;s studies?&#8221; How do this week&#8217;s readings define or explain these terms? Use specific quotes or examples in your response.<\/li>\n<li>Both hooks and Lorde address the ways that differences can operate to bring people together or further divide us.\u00a0 What do they each have to say about ideas of &#8220;difference?&#8221; How do you see this operating in your own life and\/or the world around you?<\/li>\n<li>What do this week&#8217;s readings have you thinking about?
