OUR CLASS IS FOUND HERE: https://openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu/groups/utopia/

      hey friends,

This is a long email, i am sorry, but there is a lot we need to discuss.
To prevent a coronavirus outbreak, CUNY/BMCC has announced yesterday that there will be no in-person classes on campus from today March 12 to March 18 and the spring semester will resume on 3/19 with all instruction provided through distance learning for the duration of the semester.

This means that our face-to-face class will not meet again this semester in person, but our class will continue via distance learning formats (i.e. our open lab course site https://openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu/groups/utopia/ ). If you have not created an openLab account yet, you should do so immediately.

I am currently in the process of revising our syllabus and redesigning/reformatting our class so that it can be delivered remotely. I will email you updates as I come to them. I will also post these messages in our openlab site.

      1. BMCC will remain open throughout the semester (excluding any holidays) for students to access our computer labs, the library, the Learning Resource Center and other tutoring, advisement, Single Stop, the Office of Accessibility, Counseling and other support services.

      2. From Thursday March 12 (today) to Wednesday March 18, BMCC E-Learning center will provide training and support for students to prepare for distance learning; please feel free to take advantage of them. Visit https://www.bmcc.cuny.edu/academics/elearning/student-support/ for more information.

      3. We are in good shape. I have basically told you everything I know about public speaking already, and we have talked a number of times about what happens should our classes be moved online. To briefly summarize: You create your own assignments, you do those assignments, and will share them with our group on openlab. These can still be in any format you choose, and some ideas for those options can be found in the menu doc here: https://openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu/groups/utopia/documents/

      4. I have assembled a list of resources to help you create digital projects that don’t force you to use data harvesting corporations like google, youtube, facebook etc. here: https://pad.riseup.net/p/y2h2U7yG-TOZ6NdVjVLl-keep (this is a editable doc and so feel free to add resources here, but please do not delete anything.) there is also a chat function on the right hand side of this page, and it is usable on phones as well as pcs.

      5. My best thought about how to “have class” online in terms of video meetings is to do a once a week or so video conference for an hour or two. I will create a doodle poll soon to figure out when would be the best time for use to meet up and then we can figure what tech to use etc. I do not think we will keep the 4 separate classes thing going. my big plan would be to this one meeting a week for all 4 classes. perhaps we will rotate days between M/W and T/TH. or something.

      6. Wash/Sanitize/Disinfect your hands as frequently as you can and take good care of yourself. Here are some links to important information about the corona virus and world wide efforts:

I will continue to provide updates as available. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.

      in solidarity

“there are two novels that can transform a bookish 14-year-kid’s life: the lord of the rings and atlas shrugged. one is a childish daydream that can lead to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood in which large chunks of the day are spent inventing ways to make real life more like a fantasy novel. the other is a book about orcs.” – john rogers
“i must not fear. fear is the mind-killer. fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. i will face my fear. i will permit it to pass over me and through me. and when it has gone past i will turn the inner eye to see its path. where the fear has gone there will be nothing. only i will remain.” -frank herbert, dune
