{"id":8485,"date":"2022-08-19T21:50:06","date_gmt":"2022-08-20T01:50:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/eng-201-summer-ii-2022\/?p=8485"},"modified":"2022-08-19T21:50:06","modified_gmt":"2022-08-20T01:50:06","slug":"discussion-5-corille-fisher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/eng-201-summer-ii-2022\/2022\/08\/19\/discussion-5-corille-fisher\/","title":{"rendered":"Discussion 5 &#8211; Corille Fisher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><i>The House on Mango Street<\/i> is a collection of vignettes written by Sandra Cisneros.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Of these stories, the one with which I connected most strongly is titled \u201cBorn Bad.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In \u201cBorn Bad,\u201d Esperanza remembers her Aunt Guadalupe, once a beautiful swimmer, \u201cAunt Lupe of the photographs,\u201d who Esperanza knew only in her days of sickness (Cisneros, 58).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Regarding her aunt\u2019s disability, Esperanza says, \u201cSometimes you get used to the sick and sometimes the sickness, if it is there too long, gets to seem normal\u201d (Cisneros, 59).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Having grown up watching my father battle cancer and treatment, this observation really resonated with me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For Esperanza and the other children in her family, Aunt Guadalupe\u2019s disability defines her when it came to a game where they impersonated their aunt.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Though she is blind, Aunt Guadalupe overhears the children mocking her, and soon after her passes away.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Esperanza feels guilt and shame (the main theme of this particular vignette) over her actions and realizes that her aunt was much more than her disability \u2014 she was the person who truly saw Esperanza through her poetry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Works Cited<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Cisneros, Sandra. <i>The House on Mango Street<\/i>.
