Her sharp, witty, and sometimes defiant tone helps the reader understand the themes of awareness, resistance, and growth. Sylvia comes across as bold and opinionated. She doesn\u2019t trust Miss Moore and sees her as someone who thinks she\u2019s <em data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"425\">\u201cbetter\u2019n the rest of us\u201d<\/em> because she is educated and speaks differently.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"477\" data-end=\"916\">Sylvia\u2019s defiant attitude is a big part of her voice. She doesn\u2019t like being told what to do or taught lessons, which makes her an interesting and complex character. When Miss Moore takes the children on a trip, Sylvia refuses to accept the lesson being taught: <em data-start=\"739\" data-end=\"818\">\u201cAnd I\u2019m really hating this nappy-head bitch and her goddamn college degree.\u201d<\/em> This unfiltered thought shows her resistance and frustration at feeling judged or out of place.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"918\" data-end=\"1094\">Bambara writes in a way that feels real, using slang, contractions, and informal speech to make Sylvia\u2019s voice sound natural, as if she\u2019s speaking directly to the reader.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1096\" data-end=\"1236\">Because of Sylvia\u2019s strong voice and attitude, I would title this essay &#8220;Words with Attitude: How Sylvia\u2019s Voice Shapes <em data-start=\"1218\" data-end=\"1230\">The Lesson<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An interesting part of The Lesson is Sylvia&#8217;s language and how she tells the story.
