MINE EYES HAVE SEEN

Summary

Alice Dunbar-Nelson's play “Mine Eyes Have Seen”, reflected the ideals of moral criticism proposed by Plato. The play follows the story of a couple living in a low-income neighborhood and their struggle to maintain morality despite difficult circumstances. As the protagonist is ultimately rewarded for his virtue, this can be seen to support the idea of moral piety. By depicting the reality of life, I am also working on the idea of “holding up a mirror to nature”. As such, the play can be seen as an example of the ideal of moral criticism while also reflecting the daily struggles of the lower classes. Overall, the play reflects both Plato's moral criticism and the realities of people's lives. It shows the hardships faced by people in poverty while upholding the idea of moral virtue. The play thus embodies the ideals of moral criticism while at the same time honestly portraying the realities of life.
