In place of a CV, I\u2019m going to talk a little about my career. I received my degree in economics in 1977 from The George Washington University in Washington, DC. My first job after university was at the Federal Reserve (our Central Bank). I was a research assistant, meaning I worked for economists that needed help with their papers or presentations in front of the Board of Governors of The Federal Reserve System. I lasted two years in my role; then I went to South America, the experience that inspired my connection with Spanish.<\/p>\n
Al regresar a EEUU, me mud\u00e9 a Chicago, y comenc\u00e9 un trabajo con el Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), unas de las bolsas de futuros en el pa\u00eds. Upon returning to the US, I moved to Chicago and started a job with the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), one of the country\u2019s futures exchanges. At the beginning, I was an employee of the CBOT, in the Marketing Department. I traveled throughout the country to explain and teach the uses of futures, primarily among companies that wanted to do hedging. After two years, I took a position with a commission house based on the floor of the CBOT.<\/p>\n

After almost two more years, I made a decision that determined my path for the rest of my life. In 1983, I decided to move to New York in order to continue in futures, but with a job at another futures exchange, The New York Mercantile Exchange, or NYMEX for short. While I was working for my company in New York, I was introduced to my wife by my boss\u2019 sister. Pretty convenient, huh?<\/p>\n

During the next 15 years, I worked at the NYMEX, that is to say, \u201cthe trading floor\u201d. Maybe you\u2019ve seen photos of a group of people in colorful jackets yelling and waving their arms, trading in stocks or futures. I did that for almost 20 years. At the beginning, I worked for a firm positioned in the futures exchange; then, Eventually, I traded for my own account, that\u2019s to say, I was buying and selling with my own money as an individual speculator. It\u2019s interesting that I felt much more stress when I was doing something on behalf of my clients, compared to when I traded for my own account.<\/p>\n

As we approached the new millennium, the development in technology brought about a migration of our business from the physical futures exchange to the screen. And just like that, I was working in a virtual world. Naturally, there are advantages and disadvantages. One advantage of the screen is that I was able to consider other instruments and markets, because each market was as close as a click. I returned to a role as a commission broker and in place of petroleum and metals futures, my area of specialization became foreign exchange.<\/p>\n
Despu\u00e9s de algunos a\u00f1os trabajando en el mercado de divisas exclusivamente, comenc\u00e9 trabajando con compa\u00f1\u00edas que hacen reciclaje de metales. Hoy d\u00eda, hay contratos de futuros en varios tipos de chatarra de metal, y estoy disfrutando mucho mis intercambios con gente en este campo. After a few years working in the foreign exchange market exclusively, I started working with companies that do metal recycling. Nowadays, there are futures contracts in various types of scrap metal, and I am enjoying my interactions with people in this field. One final comment: in my own case, I have formed and managed my own company, I\u2019ve created something new with partners, and I have worked as an employee. I have endured a lot as an entrepreneur. Each person needs to evaluate themselves in order to recognize their comfort zone. There are people that have a tolerance for risk and others, no. Before throwing yourself in the fire, look at your talents, resources, desires and objectives. You will avoid many tears.<\/p>\n
