Mis abuelos hablaban en Yiddish cuando no quer\u00edan que pod\u00edamos entender sus conversaciones. Ese era el \u00fanico contacto que yo ten\u00eda con otros idiomas como parte de mi vida d\u00eda a d\u00eda. Por supuesto, pas\u00e9 una parte grande de mi juventud inscrito en una escuela hebrea, pero nunca para aprender hebreo como una lengua viva, sino como el idioma de oraci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n
I was born in Chicago and I grew up there. I attended public schools in Chicago. My neighborhood was a mix of peoples and cultures; it had a lot of diversity. As a result, I had an awareness of Spanish speaking people from my earliest years. My family was very \u201cAmericanized\u201d. My grandparents spoke in Yiddish when they didn\u2019t want us to understand their conversations. That was the only contact that I had with other languages as part of my day to day life. Of course, I spent a large part of my youth enrolled in Hebrew school, but never to learn Hebrew as a living language, rather as the language of prayer.<\/p>\n

Mi padre era un comerciante de madera; un comprador de la madera para importaci\u00f3n a EE UU. After a few years of Spanish in high school and the same in college, things started to change. My father was a lumber dealer; buying timber for import into the US. I had just finished my university studies (with a degree in Economics) and I was working in our capitol for the central bank (Federal Reserve). After a year in my job, my father asked me if I was interested in a tour through South America. He described the opportunity to me as follows: \u201cIf you can improve your skills in Spanish, I\u2019m going to book appointments and meetings for you in various countries with my contacts. You are going to visit sawmills, factories, warehouses at the port and more. You will be traveling for months, but I\u2019m sure that you will like it a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mi viaje fue muy exitoso de maneras distintas. Antes de viajar, tuve que aplicarme a mis estudios en Espa\u00f1ol. Tambi\u00e9n, agend\u00e9 todas mis citas y reuniones, y puse d\u00edas en mi calendario para salir como turista. Probablemente m\u00e1s importante que nada, yo ten\u00eda un presupuesto. Por lo tanto, yo montaba el bus por muchos pa\u00edses, y me quedaba en muchos lugares con menos de 4 estrellas, es seguro decir:)<\/p>\n
My trip was very successful in different ways. Before traveling, I had to apply myself to my Spanish studies. Also, I booked all my appointments and meetings, and I put days in my calendar for going out like a tourist. Probably more important than anything, I had a budget. As a result, I rode the bus through many countries and I stayed in many places with fewer than 4 stars, it\u2019s safe to say:)<\/p>\n
Una revisi\u00f3n exhaustiva de casi 8 meses y 8 pa\u00edses requerir\u00eda un otro portafolio. Mi punto al mencionar el viaje es decir que al regresar a EE UU, decid\u00ed que yo iba a continuar con mis estudios en Espa\u00f1ol, con el objetivo de que yo iba a hacerlo un proyecto de largo plazo. Por supuesto, como es el caso muchas veces, la vida se puso en medio del camino. Para mi, me qued\u00e9 en NYC, me cas\u00e9, mi esposa y yo tuvimos dos hijos (un hijo quien es un chef, ahora 29 y una hija quien es una terapista, ahora 32). Voy a utilizar el \u201cC.V.\u201d para describir mi carrera, con las partes m\u00e1s destacadas. Pero en esta pagina, mi prop\u00f3sito es decir un poco del rol de mis estudios espa\u00f1oles en mi vida.<\/p>\n
An exhaustive review of almost 8 months and 8 countries would require another portfolio. My point in mentioning the trip is to say that upon returning to the US, I decided that I was going to continue my Spanish studies, with the objective that I was going to make it a long term project. Of course, as is the case many times, life got in the way. For me, I stayed in NYC, got married, my wife and I had 2 children (a son who is a chef, now 29 and a daughter who is a therapist, now 32). I am going to use the \u201cC.V.\u201d to describe my career, with the prominent parts. But on this page, my purpose is to say a little about the role of my Spanish studies in my life.<\/p>\n
Mi esposa y yo empezamos a salir en 1984, y nuestra boda fue en 1988. Nunca viv\u00edamos juntos antes de casarnos. \u00bfMuy tradicional, no? Con carreras paralelas en el campo financiero, decidimos que quer\u00edamos situarnos tan cerca de nuestras oficinas como posible, para que pudi\u00e9ramos caminar a nuestros trabajos. Por eso estamos aqu\u00ed en Tribeca, en el mismo piso, desde 1989. He visto un mont\u00f3n de cambios en Tribeca, la mayor\u00eda son buenos. Mi filosof\u00eda sobre la vida neoyorquina es que si tu puedes eliminar una capa de complicaci\u00f3n de tu vida, h\u00e1galo. Evitar el subte es uno.<\/p>\n
My wife and I started dating in 1984 and our wedding was in 1988. We never lived together before getting married. Very traditional, right? With parallel careers in the financial field, we decided that we wanted to locate as close to our offices as possible, in order that we would be able to walk to our jobs. That\u2019s why we are here in Tribeca, in the same apartment since 1989. I\u2019ve seen lots of changes in Tribeca, most of which are good. My philosophy about New York life is that if you can eliminate a layer of complication in your life, do it. Avoiding the subway is one.<\/p>\n
Lo que ha seguido ha sido a\u00f1os como padres, muy involucrados con las escuelas de nuestros hijos, y tambi\u00e9n con sus vidas. Hemos tenido los beneficios de un sentido de estabilidad en la vida. No doy esto por sentado. Mis padres se divorciaron cuando yo estaba en la escuela primaria, y supongo que eso me impact\u00f3. What has followed has been years as parents, very involved with our children\u2019s schools and also with their lives. We have had the benefits of a sense of stability in life. I don\u2019t take this for granted. My parents divorced when I was in grade school, and I suppose that had an impact on me. I wanted to make sure that I was going to dedicate myself to my family in a consistent and permanent way. Unfortunately, I don\u2019t have tales of adventures in the far corners of the world, but I want to believe that among my wife and I, and the children, everyone enjoys each other\u2019s company.<\/p>\n
\u00bfMis planes para el futuro? Mantener mis capacidades f\u00edsicas, intelectuales y cognitivas. No soy una persona que tiene fantas\u00edas sobre viajes, experiencias dram\u00e1ticas o m\u00e1s. My plans for the future? Maintain my physical, intellectual and cognitive capacities. I\u2019m not a person that fantasizes over trips, dramatic experiences or more. I don\u2019t have a \u201cbucket list\u201d. I try to live according to the saying: \u201cIf you\u2019re green you grow, if you\u2019re ripe, you rot\u201d.
