This opaqueness can make navigating the services a college offers a challenge, especially for non-curricular needs that are served by myriad offices with unfamiliar names (e.g., Bursar, Registrar, Provost, Dean, etc.). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One student, interviewed during prior IMLS-funded research conducted by BMCC and Ithaka S+R, astutely describes the complicated landscape of college: \u201cFor me the college is just so big. Sometimes you get bounced back and forth from departments to departments\u2026 you get lost in bureaucracy\u2026 sometimes you don\u2019t even know how to navigate the whole system.\u201d<a id=\"_ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> In fact, first-generation students in particular indicate that <em>non-curricular<\/em> information needs\u2014that is, needs related to navigating information for support outside of the classroom with issues like food security, financial aid, and technology assistance\u2014are often a bigger concern for them than <em>academic <\/em>ones, such as discovering scholarly content for a research assignment.<a id=\"_ftnref2\" href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><a id=\"_ftn1\" href=\"#_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> Wolff-Eisenberg, C. &amp; Braddlee.
