Seeing the Reality of Magic in Splintered Magic by Jilleen Dolbeare

book cover of Splintered Magic by Jilleen Dolbeare, featuring a white woman with long hair holding a large blue-eyed cat in her armsAt first glance, Splintered Magic seemed like just another entry in the paranormal fiction genre. And as someone who has never been inclined to believe in magic or the supernatural, I was skeptical about how much I would enjoy a book about a woman who finds out that magic is real and part of her inheritance. But as I turned the pages, I quickly realized that belief in magic is beside the point because life itself always finds ways to surprise us.

Dolbeare has crafted a world where the extraordinary feels unsettlingly close to reality, weaving together vivid dreamscapes and unexplainable phenomena in a way that keeps the reader hooked. The characters are flawed, real, and compelling, navigating a reality that is splintered both metaphorically and literally.

What struck me most was how the book explores the boundaries between what is real and what is imagined, making me reflect on the moments in life that feel too incredible to be coincidence. There’s a depth to the storytelling that makes this novel more than just an entertaining read; it’s a reminder that sometimes, we don’t need to believe in magic to experience something beyond explanation.

I wholeheartedly recommend Splintered Magic to adult readers who enjoy paranormal fiction or dreamlike narratives. Even for skeptics, this book offers a world worth stepping into a place where logic bends and mystery thrives.

graduation portrait of Tunde smilingAbout the author Hi, I’m Tunde! I’m a psychology major at BMCC. As a mom of three, I’ve seen firsthand how much of an impact books can have on kids. That’s why I’ve developed a passion for reviewing children’s books—because I truly believe reading is one of the most important things for young minds. It not only sparks their imagination but also helps them develop the skills and insights they’ll need as they grow. Through my reviews, I hope to help other parents and caregivers find books that not only entertain but also foster growth, learning, and emotional development in children.
