We will also start to learn about the history of Asian migration to the Americas.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Class Notes\u00a0<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>You can access the slides from our class session <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1d02e9in_leQwHNl1_c72sn6ijsSAzxIIWJapOM7shn0\/edit?usp=sharing\">here<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Read\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><b>Read: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Excerpt of Lee, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1hU8U07Pjc5DZiPX5mUeamb31qCQpL_Zu\/view?usp=sharing\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Making of Asian America<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 As you read Lee&#8217;s chapter, use these questions as a guide:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lee says that<span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u00a0Europeans had \u201clong been fascinated with Asia.\u201d How did Europeans view Asia? What were their impressions of Asia and Asians? Given specific examples from the text.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">What motivated Spain\u2019s exploration and conquest of the Pacific? What site became the \u201cseat\u201d of Spain\u2019s Pacific empire?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Who were the first migrants from Asia to the Americas? Why and how did they arrive?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Who were <em>los chinos<\/em>? Where and how did they settle?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">What motivated the new United States to trade with China? How did this relationship affect migration from Asia to the U.S.?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Who was Afong Moy? What does her story show us about how Asians were viewed in the U.S.?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>Watch<\/h6>\n<p><b>Watch: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Excerpt of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Coolies, Settlers, Sailors: Voyage to the New World <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(on Kanopy*). The film is about one hour long but you are only expected to watch the first 30 minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As you watch, consider these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What are the histories that are represented in this film? What are the motivations for migration&#8211; individual reasons, structural reasons? Where do the various migrants land and why?<\/li>\n<li>Always track&#8211; what are you learning? What is surprising to you? What did you already know about these histories and how does this documentary add to your knowledge?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*<a href=\"https:\/\/bmcccuny.kanopy.com\/\">Kanopy<\/a> is a video database available to you through the BMCC Library. You will need to l<strong>ogin to the BMCC Library<\/strong> to be able to access the database off-campus. What are the individual and structural reasons that motivated different Asian groups to come to the Americas&#8211; and be specific, which Asian groups and where did they land?<\/li>\n<li>How do these stories compare to the narratives we hear today about immigration? How do you think that the reasons or the conditions for migration have changed or stayed the same? Be specific in your discussion. Your interview transcript is due on 9\/22.
