{"id":1317,"date":"2020-12-01T15:53:36","date_gmt":"2020-12-01T20:53:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/asn-114-asian-american-history\/?p=1317"},"modified":"2020-12-01T18:25:44","modified_gmt":"2020-12-01T23:25:44","slug":"module-14","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/openlab.bmcc.cuny.edu\/asn-114-asian-american-history\/module-14\/","title":{"rendered":"Module 14"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6>Reading<\/h6>\n<p>There is no new reading this week, but here are some pieces you may want to look at in connection to our discussion today:<\/p>\n<p>Here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=skRk35P1q4g\">link to the conversation we watched in class<\/a>, from an episode of Democracy Now (April 21, 2016).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/12\/opinion\/sunday\/floyd-abolish-defund-police.html\">Yes, we mean literally abolish the police<\/a> by Mariame Kaba- this essay goes through some of the history that Nina mentioned today and makes an argument for why &#8220;reform&#8221; will never actually get to the problems with policing because they are part of its foundation.<\/p>\n<p>A short video that explains &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?list=PLQ9B-p5Q-YOM0YQgtc9N-EnsCjnLC1qlV&amp;v=8N3LihLvfa0&amp;feature=emb_logo\">restorative justice<\/a>&#8220;&#8211; I&#8217;m interested to hear what you think might be applicable in the case that we talked about today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/9353ky\/what-is-transformative-justice-police-abolition\">This article<\/a> defines the terms &#8220;community accountability,&#8221;restorative justice&#8221; and &#8220;transformative justice&#8221; and compares these approaches to addressing harm that has been caused.<\/p>\n<p>Information about the new NYC &#8220;Mental Health Teams&#8221; that will serve as emergency responders for mental health crises: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/773-20\/new-york-city-new-mental-health-teams-respond-mental-health-crises\">NYC press release<\/a> about the program. It&#8217;s modeled in part after the <a href=\"https:\/\/whitebirdclinic.org\/cahoots\/\">CAHOOTS program<\/a> which is in Eugene (not Portland!), Oregon.<\/p>\n<h6>Discussion Board #14<\/h6>\n<p>No post other than the post of your archive project.
