And yes \u2014 it can seriously affect your financial aid, balance owed to the college, and future registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to avoid it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Understand your class format!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all summer classes work the same way!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In-Person<\/strong>: You must physically attend class. Missing the first classes can lead to a WN grade very quickly during summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Synchronous Online Classes<\/strong>: \u201cSynchronous\u201d means your class meets LIVE online at scheduled times on Zoom, Brightspace, or another platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are expected to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attend the live sessions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete required work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply logging into Brightspace is usually NOT enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Asynchronous Online Classes<\/strong>: \u201cAsynchronous\u201d means there are no live class meetings, but you are still expected to complete work regularly online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discussion posts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assignments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quizzes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brightspace activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Just because there\u2019s no live meeting does NOT mean the course is self-paced or optional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Check Brightspace and your syllabus BEFORE classes start!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many professors require:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An introduction post<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First assignment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quiz<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attendance activity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Missing these early requirements can lead to a WN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Read your BMCC email every day!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Important updates about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Class cancellations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attendance requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Financial aid issues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ASAP support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professor announcements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026are usually sent to your BMCC email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of\u00a0<strong>April 13th, 2026<\/strong>, current student email accounts (@stu.bmcc.cuny.edu) have been retired and shifted to the <strong>CUNY Login account <\/strong>(@login.cuny.edu).\u00a0Moving forward, you should\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/servicedesk.bmcc.cuny.edu\/TDClient\/33\/Portal\/KB\/ArticleDet?ID=2199\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sign in to Outlook and any other Microsoft 365 apps<\/a>\u00a0using your<strong> CUNY Login account<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also log into: <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/bmcc-cuny.campus.eab.com\/__;!!Jjn2ZwtPC4Q!Z1et1ZmVQJERGZJXCa0aU_OnYlJ0EtxfUA1Jt2PkPTX67Kyp87HNw7SW8D1jgunqQBTI299QB5qyaS0g2qsbxvdjPpst$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/bmcc-cuny.campus.eab.com\/<\/a> to view your messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmcc.cuny.edu\/library\/blog\/2026-03\/bmcc-email-changing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.bmcc.cuny.edu\/library\/blog\/2026-03\/bmcc-email-changing\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Don\u2019t stop attending!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you changed your mind about summer classes, do <strong>NOT <\/strong>just disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who <strong>stop <\/strong>attending without officially dropping may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Receive WN grades<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Owe tuition balances<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lose financial aid eligibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid tuition charges, always drop <strong>before <\/strong>the deadline listed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmcc.cuny.edu\/academics\/academic-calendar\/summer-6w1-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BMCC academic calendar<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you missed the drop deadline, consider withdrawing from the course (WD or W grade). Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmcc.cuny.edu\/academics\/academic-calendar\/summer-6w1-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BMCC academic calendar<\/a> for key withdrawal dates. Contact your ASAP Academic Advisor for options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Ask for help EARLY!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having issues with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Childcare?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work schedule?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technology?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transportation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Financial aid?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understanding coursework?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Reach out EARLY:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your ASAP Advisor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ASAP Financial Aid<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your professor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tutoring\/support services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The sooner you ask, the more options you usually have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remember!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>WN grades can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cancel financial aid<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create balances owed to BMCC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Result in a Bursar Hold <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prevent you from registering for a future semester<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Affect future academic progress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Staying active and communicating early can help protect your aid and keep you on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summer classes move FAST \u2014 and one of the biggest mistakes students make is accidentally receiving a WN grade.
