Showing emotion through movement: the flour sack<\/strong><\/h1>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Animators have used the \u201cflour sack\u201d exercise for decades to practice weight, timing, expression and exaggeration. The fact that a flour sack\u2019s design is very simple is key: we cannot rely on facial features or elaborate limbs. We have to get to the essence of animation \u2013 the 12 principles \u2013 to imbue the character with personality.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

For inspiration on conveying emotion through motion, look at\u00a0Michael Dudok de Wit\u2019s\u00a0Father and Daughter<\/em>\u00a0(2000)<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Pixar\u2019s\u00a0Luxo Jr<\/em> (1986).<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Flour Sack Assignment<\/h2>\r\n

Pick\u00a0one<\/strong>\u00a0of the following expressions and apply it to a\u00a0flour sack<\/strong>:<\/p>\r\n

sad \u2013 happy \u2013 proud \u2013 shy \u2013 anxious \u2013 frightened \u2013 tired \u2013 confused \u2013 surprised \u2013 excited<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n

Use the principles we covered in our bouncing ball exercises to give your object personality.\u00a0NO eyes, mouth, or other facials features allowed<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the expression must be conveyed through movement.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n

Draw a few key poses<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0before starting to animate to get familiar with the sack\u2019s design\u00a0(you can use paper or your favorite drawing app).<\/p>\r\n

Act out<\/strong>\u00a0the emotion yourself and take note of your body language \u2013 which parts of your body change when you are sad\/shy\/tired etc? Are your movements fast, slow, tentative, assured etc.?<\/p>\r\n
