The 4-5th paragraph of the article stood out to me. In these paragraphs, Wong is illustrating how indigenous schools generally provide a curriculum and structure that are designed only to appeal and work with indigenous cultures and needs. The author states that the purpose of this is to highlight the ways natives of a culture come to know things or gain knowledge. However, as Wong points out, this does little to improve native literacy or bring these communities closer to their peers in other cultures and communities.<\/p>\n
2. Of the things many things I learned from the videos, the one that stood out was how overlooked native Americans are in our education system and even our society. The video \u201cNative American Students Respond to American Education\u201d sheds light on how stereotypes affect children going through the U.S education system and it is coming from children who experience it first hand. One of the students states how the school system is “harsher” against certain races. I have not experienced any of this personally, but I have known people in my life who are minorities who were treated unfavorable in school compared to other. I liked how the video ended on a positive note by asking these children what their hopes were for the future. Many of them shared their dreams of lifting their people and families. This is something we can all relate to. The video “\u201cNative American Student Education\u201d shows how a school administration is trying to make an effort to raise awareness of issues that native americas face in the school system while also trying to bring their culture into the system which is something I liked. It was also great to hear that the school had graduated 100% of their Native American students<\/p>\n
3. I discovered this interview titled “Native American Education” by Comcast News. The anchor interviews president of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium,\u00a0Carrie Billy. The topic of the interview is budget cuts done by the U.S educational system in 2013 that are especially affecting Native American communities across the country. I chose this video because it. But it also introduced me to AIHEC which are an institution to help Native Americans pursuing higher education in the country, and as well as sway federal policies that would help these communities. I went through there website and found that this institution \u00a0as been working for Native American communities since the 1970s. We get to see other aspects of how communities play a role in advancing education. As with this organization, they play a role for native Americans pursuing higher education.<\/p>\n
